Andre Onana told why AFCON break could be beneficial for his Manchester United career

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been told a change of scenery away from Old Trafford could help him to reset and kick on his career in the Premier League.

At the beginning of January, Onana will link up with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast. Should his country go all the way in the tournament, the former Inter Milan shot-stopper could miss up to nine matches for the Reds in all competitions.

In his absence, Altay Bayindir will take over the reins in goal having yet to make his debut for United. MEN Sport reported at the end of November Onana had become anxious about his absence during the tournament as it could lead to him losing his place permanently to the Turkish shot-stopper.

But speaking to the MEN, former United striker Dwight Yorke believes the tournament could be a blessing for Onana amidst his up-and-down form so far this season. "There's nothing Onana can do about being away for the AFCON," he explained.

"Perhaps he could do with a break from Man United as he's had a tough spell and he hasn't covered himself in glory in recent weeks. I think Onana is second-best to what United could have bought, and that's a problem. The whole club is second, or third-best and their ambitions seem to be to finish in the top four. United used to be all about being the best!

"It would have been great if Onana was the best 'keeper in the league, but he's not. Nobody cares who finished second in the Premier League, and I don't resonate with United's second-best mentality. Being second is a new trend at Man United, and I think the club are happy with it. That's just my take.
