Andre Onana praised for showing two things on Manchester United debut vs Real Madrid

Andy Cole says Andre Onana’s passing and shot-stopping came to the fore on his Manchester United debut against Real Madrid on Thursday.

The goalkeeper made his maiden outing for United a week after being unveiled as Erik ten Hag’s second signing of the summer. He had joined up with the squad the day before Saturday’s friendly with Arsenal but was not included in the squad despite taking part in the warm-up.

However, the Cameroon star was given the nod against Madrid although could do little about either of the goals conceded in the 2-0 defeat. Jude Bellingham’s clever chip and Joselu’s emphatic overhead kick denied Onana the dream debut.

Cole said the 27-year-old will nevertheless still be disappointed with the concession of two strikes but may be pleased with his display overall while completing the full 90 minutes.

Ahead of kick-off Cole said Onana fits the bill when it comes to the type of goalkeeper Ten Hag is looking for at United as the rebuild rolls on. He added: "The manager has changed the way he wants to play from the back.

“He wants to play with a goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Onana is just that."
