Andre Onana dropped by Cameroon as Manchester United keeper benched for AFCON tie

Andre Onana was dropped for Cameroon's crucial Africa Cup of Nations clash against Gambia on Tuesday.

The Manchester United goalkeeper agreed to join up with his national team for their AFCON campaign in the Ivory Coast at a later date to enable him to represent United in matches against Wigan and Tottenham. Onana started at Old Trafford on Sunday, January 14 and began his journey after the game.

But his private jet was stranded in Abidjan, Ivory Coast the next day due to bad weather conditions in Yamoussoukro, which is where Cameroon played Guinea. Onana eventually arrived at the game but his cousin Fabrice Ondoa started in goal during a 1-1 draw.

The United keeper was selected for Cameroon's second group game against Senegal but shipped three goals in a 3-1 defeat. Onana failed to make a single save during the game.

And now Cameroon coach Rigobert Song has chosen Ondoa for their Group C finale against Gambia. The Indomitable Lions need three points to ensure qualification for the knockout stages.

Onana's demotion to the bench for Cameroon is in stark contrast to his first season at United. Manager Erik ten Hag, who worked with Onana at Ajax, has started the 27-year-old in every game so far in 2023/24.
