"An unfair decision!" - Corberan explains Huddersfield Town defence giving him the right sort of problem

Huddersfield Town’s head coach Carlos Corberan faces a huge decision for each of their remaining six league games as his centre-backs are giving him the right sort of problem. For Friday night’s 1-0 win over Hull Matty Pearson was benched having been in a superb run of form, and Corberan took the time to explain his thinking.

Corberan likes to outnumber the strikers he is facing, so a lone centre-forward just requires a two, a striker with a close ten or a false nine near to them tends to require a three. All of Town’s first team choices this season in the position – Tom Lees, Matty Pearson, and Levi Colwill – have made 25 or more appearances so far.

“I think Tom Lees was doing an excellent job as a left centre-back despite it not being his best position,” said Town’s head coach after the Hull win, “because he’s a right-footed player and really we want a right-footer and a left-footer for me because the options to play out better from back increase as it’s more natural for the players to play in their natural position.

“During the time that Colwill was injured – a long time – Tom Lees was doing a good sacrifice for the time as it’s not a position he feels comfortable on the left,” he
