Amusing X-rated reason behind Pipa's apparent name change after Huddersfield Town exit

When Pipa first arrived at Huddersfield Town he had to fight, Beastie Boys style, for the right to wear his preferred mononym on the back of his shirt, with the EFL at first insisting he had to use one of his surnames, Avila, above his squad number instead. But now he has moved to Olympiacos, he may be well-advised to go the opposite way.

It looks like he has been given that advice: Olympiacos’ statement announcing his signing refers to him throughout as Gonzalo Avila Gordon, as does their accompanying YouTube video. The Greek media have followed suit, too; if that is anything to go by, it looks like he’ll be going by ‘Avila’ from now on.

The reason behind that may all be Greek to you at first, but there it might be a sensible move. Pípa, or πίπα in Greek text, does literally translate to ‘pipe’, just as it does in Spanish – but it also has another, somewhat less innocuous meaning, being used in Greek slang to refer to a particular sex act.

Juvenile guffaws aside, Pipa/Avila told Greek outlet To10: "I had not talked to any [Olympiacos] player, although my impressions of Olympiacos were all good. I had heard the best things about their story but also about their fans. It was a very good opportunity for me to come to Olympiacos.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us now. My mind is there too, I have this mentality. I am a player who always wants to win, I do not easily accept defeat."

The right-back is now joined at the Greek champions by Philip Zinckernagel, who lined up against Town in the Championship play-off final while on loan at Nottingham Forest. The midfielder has completed a move to Athens from his parent club, Watford.
