Amber weather warning hits popular holiday hotspots a day after earthquake

An amber weather warning has been put in place in a popular holiday hotspot a day after an earthquake struck. The weather alert, for wind, covers parts of the Canary Islands including Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera and Lanzarote.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued the notification from Thursday (September 12), warning of strong winds The warnings, which may be extended beyond Thursday, claims winds could reach speeds of up to 70km per hour.

It comes just a day after an earthquake, the biggest in 60 years, hit Gran Canaria on Tuesday (September 10). The island was rumbled by the tremor at 7.20pm, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale.

The weather warning for Gran Canaria is in place from 3pm until 11.59pm on Thursday, covering the peaks and eastern, southern, and western regions of the island.

In Tenerife, the alert will be introduced from 12pm, with strong winds of up to 70km per hour expected particularly in the areas of Candelaria and El Rosario.

The warning is in place in Lanzarote, with winds expected throughout the island and particularly in the southern regions. The warning is in place from 3am to 1159pm. And, in La Gomera, the alert is also introduced from 12pm.

Meteoblue says 'moderate damage to people and properties may occur', especially to those in 'exposed areas.'

It comes just a day after the small earthquake struck Gran Canaria. The shaking was felt in 14 of the island's 21 municipalities, with seismologists calling it the fiercest in 60 years.
