Amad joins Sunderland on loan as Manchester United strike wage agreement

Manchester United winger Amad has joined Sunderland on loan for the season.

The 20-year-old's salary has been split between United and the Championship club, who installed Tony Mowbray as manager on Tuesday.

Amad signed for United for a fee rising to £37million on transfer deadline day in October 2020 but has only played nine times, scoring once.

Amad was due to join Feyenoord on a season-long loan last August but a thigh injury scotched the move and he eventually joined Rangers on a four-month loan in January.

The Ivory Coast international struggled in Scotland, where he only started twice in the league.

United manager Erik ten Hag did not start Amad in any of their pre-season games, preferring to select Tahith Chong ahead of him in the final friendly against Rayo Vallecano.

Amad emerged to score United's only goal of the game but his role as a false nine in friendlies indicated he was not in Ten Hag's plans.

The former Atalanta winger scored in the behind-closed doors friendly against Halifax earlier this month.

Dean Henderson, Alex Telles and Eric Bailly have already left United on loan this summer, with their temporary clubs covering their wages in full.

Hannibal Mejbri completed a loan move to Championship side Birmingham on Monday.
