Amad is set for another breakthrough at Manchester United

When a player has entered the last year of their contract and they change representation, the assumption is a transfer is in the offing.

That is not the case with Amad. He is now mentioned by Manchester United staff among the young players to carry the torch and it is difficult not to be enthused by his ebullient 45 minutes against Rangers at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Jadon Sancho's presence in the starting XI threatened to be the story. Sancho is a past relic whereas Amad is very much the present and the future. He was the matchwinner and the man of the match.

It was a moot point that Amad inflicted such damage on a former club. That short loan in Glasgow two-and-a-half years ago ended almost as soon as it started, a debut goal followed by a chastening 45 minutes at Celtic Park, where Amad was hooked at the pause. He did not start in the Scottish Premiership again.

Amad's harrowing background would suggest he is not lacking in resilience. He has overcome a wretched loan, a change of managers during his second loan and significant early season injuries two years apart to be recognised as an integral squad member at United.

It was a year ago that Amad left the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on crutches after coming on against Arsenal at half-time. He lasted 14 minutes. Peculiarly, Amad was named on the bench for the next match against Real Madrid in Houston yet limped through the mixed zone at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas four days later. He did not play again for five months.
