Ally McCoist puts Rangers fan club on hold for Neil Warnock as legend predicts 'outrageous' Aberdeen change

Ally McCoist reckons Neil Warnock will light up Scottish football, but hopes Rangers can make it a miserable start north of the border.

The interim Aberdeen boss takes his new team to Ibrox on Tuesday night for his first game in charge since replacing Barry Robson. Warnock can propel the Dons into the top six with a win in Govan, but the incentive for Philippe Clement's men is huge as they have the chance to go top of the Scottish Premiership for the first time this season and pile the pressure on Celtic.

Warnock spoke at his Pittodrie unveiling of how much he likes McCoist, and the feeling from the TalkSport pundit is mutual. He expects Warnock to ring the changes in a bid to improve the struggling Dons' fortunes and thinks the veteran will be good for the game as a whole. But McCoist's desire to see Rangers back on top trumps his fondness for the former Sheffield United and QPR boss.

"I want it on the record that I'm a big Neil Warnock fan and I hope he does well...but not tonight!" McCoist told TalkSport. "I think it's great, I really do. What's this his 17th club? And he's probably been at some of those more than once in that period. It's just amazing.

"You say football's a drug to some people and it's never been more suited to a man other than Neil Warnock, because he just absolutely loves it. He lives and breathes it.

"I'm so pleased actually because I think he'll be great for Scottish football. Even if it's just until the end of the season, I think he'll brighten the place up. I think he'll get Aberdeen going. They're sitting in an outrageous position. Eighth for Aberdeen is completely and utterly unacceptable. So I would expect changes at Aberdeen, but hopefully not this evening!"
