All 14 of Philippe Clement's Rangers transfers ranked against GVB and Beale as one key fact blows signing myth away

Philippe Clement had an excuse for everything.

Whether it was irrelevant stats to justify another shambolic result or a TOENAIL costing Rangers a goal at Pittodrie, the Belgian's press conferences frustrated the life out of the Ibrox faithful. But one of the many gripes that needs to be set straight is his perceived lack of funds. Clement bemoaned the gulf in finances when it suited him and scored a major OG with his own fans by claiming Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur were financially out of the Govan side's league - just days before the Old Firm League Cup Final at Hampden.

Conveniently, there was no mention of transfer budgets when his flops crashed to defeats against Queen's Park, Ross County and St Mirren. And while Clement may have suffered turbulence during his much-talked-about summer rebuild, the former Monaco and Club Brugge gaffer still shelled out more than £16million on 14 signings across his year-and-a-half in the hotseat.

That dwarfs the total spent by Gio van Bronckhorst, who was sacked only months after lifting the Scottish Cup and coming within a penalty of winning the Europa League. And incredibly, Clement splurged just £1.68m less than predecessor Michael Beale - who was chastised for squandering millions on duds.
