Alexander Zverev retires vs Rafael Nadal after nasty injury in French Open clash
Alexander Zverev was forced to retire after suffering a nasty injury in his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal on Friday afternoon.
The two players played out an epic 91-minute first-set. It was Nadal who won it, saving four set points before winning the tie-breaker 10-8.
The second set was more of the same, with both players playing some scintillating tennis.
But disaster struck when the German rolled his ankle in the 12th game of the set.
Nadal was battling to hold his serve and force a tie-break. He managed to do so but there was immediate concern for Zverev, who rolled his ankle when attempting to return the ball.
Zverev collapsed to the ground immediately and screamed out in agony.
He was eventually helped up by medics and left the court in a wheelchair. He appeared some five minutes later on crutches and retired from the match.
