Alex McLeish predicts Villa exit as Steer has uncertain future

Jed Steer has an uncertain future at Aston Villa, having struggled for playing time while falling further down the pecking order under Steven Gerrard. The 29-year-old was playing a supporting role to Emiliano Martinez early this season but is now third-choice following the arrival of Robin Olsen.

Steer, whose contract at Villa is up in just over 12 months, was loaned out to Luton Town in January but has made just three appearances due to an achilles injury, so he’s not been able to prove his worth to any visiting scouts.

The 29-year-old has made just nine appearances since Villa’s promotion from the Championship in 2019 and Alex McLeish believes there will be an exodus this summer.

He told Football Insider: “If these players are beginning to be out of the squad or not playing enough, they have to get their own personal careers together. They will want to play regular football.”

Steer joined Villa from Norwich City in 2013 and has gone on to make 36 appearances in all competitions, conceding 37 goals and keeping 10 clean sheets.

The 29-year-old’s inability to nail down a regular place for a prolonged period led to loan moves at Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town, Huddersfield Town, Charlton Athletic and Luton, so it’s hard to see him ever being first choice at Villa.

Steer may not be handed an extension beyond 2023 either, so he could be sold this summer, lest Villa lost the goalkeeper on a free transfer.
