Why Trezeguet might stay at Villa

Trezeguet has an uncertain future at Aston Villa after falling down the pecking order and being loaned out to Istanbul Basaksehir in February, but his form away from Villa Park might give Steven Gerrard pause for thought.

The Villa boss has been ruthless cutting deadwood from the squad, loaning out Wesley Moraes to Internacional, Anwar El Ghazi to Everton, Matt Targett to Newcastle United, Jed Steer to Luton Town and Keinan Davis to Nottingham Forest before the winter transfer window shut, but all is not lost for Trezeguet.

The 27-year-old has scored five goals with two assists in nine Super Lig games, contributed a goal or assist every 100 minutes on average. He’s scored and created more in the league than Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Bertrand Traore, so should Gerrard give him another chance in pre-season.

Trezeguet has created more chances in nine league games (15) than Bailey (7) all season, so he’s outperforming the players that were keeping him out the side before. The Egyptian international will return to Villa Park at the end of the season, so his performances until then could have a factor on what Gerrard does.
