Alex Lowry reacts to Hearts golden goal as Rangers star admits pep talk from a legend inspired 'perfection'

Buzzing Alex Lowry says a couple of choice words from Craig Gordon helped him run out and sink Kilmarnock on Tuesday night.

And he's delighted it ended a dry run that was starting to "worry" him a little bit. Hearts looked to be toiling towards extra-time at Rugby Park but it was on-loan Rangers man Lowry who came off the bench to save the day. Groans and jeers among the travelling fans gave way to scenes of wild celebrations as Lowry took one touch in the box to spin Joe Wright before firing past Will Dennis to secure a late 2-1 victory.

It came just seconds after he was substituted on and provided some much-needed relief for under-fire Steven Naismith, who watched Brad Lyons cancel out Jorge Grant's opener on a day fans launched protests against Ann Budge and the board following a downturn in domestic form. Lowry's moment of magic though changed the mood and he said the simple message from Gordon and his manager before he went on was the key to ending a nine-game run without a goal for the Jambos.

He said: "It was brilliant. It's been a long time coming, that's my 10th game now and I hadn't scored yet so I was starting to worry a wee bit. But it was the perfect moment, last minute of the game and I put it in the corner. So it's great that we're through.

"When I came on, the manager told me to be the matchwinner. And Gordie said it to me as well. So it was good for me to go and do that and we came out on top.

"That was one of the most meaningful moments of my career. My debut goal was up there but that was a different feeling. I've never had the chance to actually put a first team through before so it was an unreal feeling. I'm delighted."
