Duncan Ferguson lifts lid on Rangers prison sentence as he still can't shake sense jail rulebook was 'rewritten'

Duncan Ferguson says the rulebook was 'rewritten' with his prison stint as he claims he was asked to return to playing for the national side EVERY year.

The Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss was sent to prison back in 1994 and ordered to serve three months in jail for head-butting Raith Rovers defender John McStay whilst playing for Rangers, having been convicted of an on-field assault. And the former Everton man has spoken at length about his time spent at Barlinnie that saw an end to his Scotland career. He also sued the SFA back then and didn't reignite his Scotland career.

But Ferguson claimed he was asked every single year to return to the national side, even when he was in his 30s as he revealed he came very close to pulling on the jersey when asked by Rangers icon Ally McCoist. Yet the now Caley gaffer never did come back, and admits it was a tough time in his life. He takes his Scottish Championship side to face Raith on Saturday.

He told Sky Sports: "You don't think about it that much. It just happened didn't it? It happens. It's a part of my life - you just have to accept it. I think it was a tough decision when it happened to me. I don't think it was the first time it happened to any one on a football pitch but to be sent to prison. It's the last time. Somebody must have rewrote the rulebook. I think as the years have gone on people have thought about it and said 'he shouldn't have been in there'.

"Not a nice environment for a young fella, or anybody for that matter. It wasn't easy for myself because I played for Rangers...You do what you have to do, get on with it. And you live to tell the tale."
