Airdrie will go out all guns blazing to win the cup, says boss Rhys McCabe

Rhys McCabe says Airdrie will go out all guns blazing to win the SPFL Trust Trophy on Sunday – as they chase their first silverware for 16 years.

The Diamonds are in the showpiece final against Welsh side The New Saints at the Falkirk Stadium, and go into it on a high after Saturday’s 5-2 win at home to Arbroath puts them in the fourth place play-off slot in the Championship.

McCabe says that’s a great position to be in – but that’s all it is so far, and there is a lot of hard work ahead as they hope to end the campaign with promotion and a trophy.

Airdrie haven’t won a cup since winning the Trust Trophy in 2008 and McCabe said: “It would be massive for us and for me to win this trophy.

“For me, personally, it’s my first gig coming into the job, and to get promoted through the play-offs last season was massive for the club and it has done me wonders.

“Kicking on from that, putting ourselves in the position to even be spoken about as challenging for the play-offs, is really pleasing.

“I’m not one that’s going to be happy to be eighth, or just staying up by the skin or our teeth – I really want to implement my way, the way we play, and have guys talking for the right reasons.

“We were unlucky in the Scottish Cup, we got to the last 16, so we’ve done reasonably well in that as well, and on another day you maybe sneak through.

“It’s not often in your career, no matter what level you are, to say you’re fighting for a trophy and you potentially can lift one at the end of the game.

“I’m really pleased, really determined from a personal point of view, and from a club point of view.

“We’ll be going out there all guns blazing to win the cup.”
