Airdrie should have piled more misery on Morton, but win gives us platform for play-offs, says Rhys McCabe
Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe reckons a big win over Morton has given them a great platform to make the Championship play-offs.
Nikolay Todorov's 11th goal of the season inside 60 seconds and Charlie Telfer's 15th minute strike had the hosts cruising at half-time.
And Mason Hancock's header in the second half made sure of all three points at a blustery New Broomfield, before Michael Garrity grabbed a consolation for the visitors.
That has taken McCabe's men five clear of sixth-place Morton going into their final five games, while they also sit three ahead of fifth-place Dunfermline, with a game in hand.
And while McCabe believes they should have piled more misery on Morton, he is happy to have their play-off destiny in their own hands.
He said: "I thought the boys performed really well, apart from the last 15 minutes when it became a bit scrappy.
“For large parts of the game we were in control and if I am being really critical it should have been a lot more.
"To go and put on that manner of performance today and come away with such a convincing win is pleasing.
"It has always been the message to make sure it is in our hands and we don't have to rely on others or a result going our way.
"We've seen how unpredictable this league is so if we can take care of our own business, we'll give ourselves a great opportunity.
"This result gives us a really good platform going into the remaining games."
He added: “Toddy takes his finish really well, he takes it early. If he’s missed it, I’d have been telling him he needs to take it in a bit further.
“But we looked a real threat. We managed to exploit their back four and really stretch them. Morton are a hard side to beat."
