Airdrie striker admits Morton draw was 'worst we've played in a while'

Shell-shocked Airdrie striker Gabby McGill was pleased to get back in the team for their 0-0 draw at home to Morton, but says that was the worst they’ve played in a while.

In a game that won’t live long in the memory of the pre-Christmas crowd, there were few chances created by either side.

It took until the second half before either side had a shot on target – first Airdrie’s Calum Gallagher and Morton’s Lewis Strapp, with neither ever looking likely to yield three points.

McGill, making his first start in three games, tested Morton keeper Ryan Mullen’s reflexes from close range inside 90 seconds, following a bit of pinball in the box.

Mason Hancock was decked just outside the Morton box in nine minutes, with player-boss Rhys McCabe curling the free kick over.

Airdrie tried again in 24 minutes when McGill set up Calum Gallagher just outside the box, but his curling shot flew over.

Hancock’s cross was just too far ahead of Airdrie sub Josh O’Connor in 75 minutes, as the ball slid across the face of the Morton goal.

At the other end, Morton sub Jack Bearne sent a shot skidding past the right post two minutes later.

The result leaves Airdrie in seventh and Morton in fifth, as they were before kick-off.

McGill, who last played in the 2-1 defeat at Partick Thistle on December 2, said: “It wasn’t good conditions for both teams, and I know both teams got a point from the game, but it was frustrating.

“Obviously we look at our recent run in form, and maybe there has been a bit of a lack of goals.

“I came into the side, but if you want me to be honest, I think that’s the worst we’ve played in a while.”
