Airdrie played into Morton's hands in 0-0 draw, says defender

Airdrie defender Mason Hancock reckons they played into Morton’s hands by conceding too many fouls, as they battled out a 0-0 draw in the Championship.

It’s as you were for both sides, as Morton remained fifth while Airdrie are still in seventh spot, and the draw doesn’t really suit either club.

But Hancock reckons with few chances created in a game that won’t live long in the memory, maybe a draw was the fair result.

He said: “It was a frustrating one for the team.

“It was the same pace from kick-off, really, no reaction at half-time, and when the first half is like that, you need a reaction from all of us.

“It was scrappy, we kind of played into their hands and gave a lot of fouls away.

“We need to cut them out, and as much as we gave less away in the second half, that’s their game – they want to get balls in the box, they’ve got a good delivery, a long throw and they’ve got big boys, so we played into their hands.

“We never got going ourselves.

“I think a point is a fair result, there’s not much in the game either way, not many chances created by either side.

“Results elsewhere were one-pointers, so maybe we just look back at that, see what we can take from it and go again.”

Gabby McGill had an effort saved by Morton keeper Ryan Mullen after 90 seconds, but it wasn’t a portent of what was to come, with a Rhys McCabe free kick fired over in nine minutes, before Calum Gallagher curled a shot over in 24 minutes.

Gallagher was also responsible for Airdrie’s first shot on target in 54 minutes, and nine minutes later Lewis Strapp managed the same for ’Ton, but neither were likely to make an impact.
