Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe expects improvements after Queen's Park draw

Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe warned that his side have “two or three” more levels to move up to, after moving up to fourth in the Championship with a 1-1 draw at home to Queen’s Park on Friday night.

Calum Gallagher got the hosts off the mark seven minutes from the break when Liam McStravick pounced on a Will Tizzard error and sent the striker through to fire past Callum Ferrie.

Only a fine save from the Spiders keeper two minutes later prevented Gallagher from doubling his and Airdrie’s tally.

But Queen’s Park drew level less than a minute into the second half, when keeper Josh Rae passed straight to Jack Spong, who fed on-loan Southampton kid Jack Turner to score.

Queen’s Park were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when on-loan Bayern Munich winger Barry Hepburn was sent off for kicking out at Mason Hancock.

And Ferrie was kept busy again shortly afterwards to deny Nikolay Todorov in stoppage time.

McCabe says he’s relatively happy with the Diamonds’ position after the first quarter, having made the step up in the summer.

The player-boss told the club’s website: “I think there are loads more levels to come from us.

“I think there’s probably another two or three levels that hopefully we’ll be hitting, come the second part of the season.

“But it’s a reasonable start, it’s positive, and one that we can build on.

“Now we’ve had a feel for everyone in the league and we know what to expect, nothing really jumps out and scares me, in terms of teams running away with it.

“It’s important that the positives outweigh the negatives, and I think after a long period not in the league, to be promoted with the young squad we’ve assembled, and play the way I want to, is great.
