Rangers pyro show sparks SPFL and Scottish government showdown as chiefs set for talks after Dens Park chaos

SPFL chiefs and select members of the Scottish government are poised for conversations after pyro controversy at Rangers' win over Dundee.

Philippe Clement's side romped to a 5-0 win but the huge show of flares in the away end has proven the dominant talking point. The game was paused for 18 minutes - with kick-off already delayed due to traffic - as smoke from the array of pyrotechnics set off a fire alarm and forced the players off the pitch.

After all the stoppages and delays, the game eventually finished at 22:40. But according to BBC Scotland, it has forced the league's hierarchy and representatives of the government into talks with Police Scotland at a meeting which will be held by The Football Safety Officers Association. It's stated that "the increasing use of fireworks and flares at Scottish football grounds is to be discussed at a meeting later this month" between the four parties. It comes off the back of Wednesday's chaotic Dens Park fixture, it goes on to state.

A spokesperson for the SPFL condemned the scenes in Tayside. The statement reads: "The extensive use of pyrotechnics at the match at Dens Park is very concerning and unwelcome.

"The disruption to the game is obviously extremely regrettable. We await the delegate report and will be liaising with Police Scotland on the incident."

Dundee have already said they are "investigating and working with the relevant authorities after a series of unacceptable actions in the stands." They added: "Despite robust practice by all clubs in the SPFL and the SFA at Hampden, flares, offensive banners and singing of sectarian songs continue to be a problem all across our game in Scottish Football.
