Airdrie 1, Dundee 0: McCabe wins it for Airdrie with late penalty

Airdrie stunned Premiership newcomers Dundee as a late Rhys McCabe penalty gave them a crucial victory at New Broomfield.

It was a tale of two penalties, as Josh Rae saved Diego Pineda's effort at the other end in a frankly dull second half.

But a push on the back gave McCabe the chance to bury the spot-kick and he didn't miss.

Airdrie had beaten St Mirren and Motherwell at this stage of the competition in recent years, so this is no real surprise, but it was still a great result for them.

Despite Dundee's obvious quality, the first half was pretty even, with both sides forcing a good save from the opposition goalkeeper.

Lyall Cameron tested Airdrie keeper Josh Rae with a curling shot, before Adam Frizzell was denied at close range by Dundee's Jon McCracken.

In the second half Rae's penalty save was the only high point up until McCabe's penalty goal.

Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe made two changes from the 2-0 win over Dumbarton last weekend, as boss Rhys McCabe and Murray Aiken replaced Dean McMaster and Charlie Telfer.

His Dundee counterpart Tony Docherty made three changes from the 1-0 victory over Bonnyrigg Rose in midweek. Jack Wilkie, Malachi Boateng and Josh Mulligan came in for Owen Beck, Zach Robinson and Max Anderson.

Airdrie's first real chance came in six minutes when Aiken crossed for Calum Gallagher, but the striker was stretching and sent his header wide of the left post.

At the other end, Lyall Cameron picked out Josh Mulligan, but he blasted his shot well over in eight minutes.

Luke McCowan then sent a low shot whistling past the right post from 19 yards.
