Dundee cup upset shows Airdrie capable of stinging Partick Thistle, says Craig Watson

Craig Watson reckons Airdrie are capable of stinging Partick Thistle this weekend to give their Championship campaign the jag it needs, after Saturday’s opening day defeat at Dunfermline.

The Diamonds defender bagged the club’s first goal in the second tier when he opened the scoring at East End Park, but the Pars turned the game around with goals either side of the break to ensure Airdrie left Fife empty-handed.

Rhys McCabe’s men will now look to bounce back against a Partick side who were agonisingly close to winning promotion to the Premiership last season, losing out in the play-off final on penalties to Ross County.

And while Watson recognises it will be a tough test, he feels Airdrie’s League Cup win over Premiership Dundee last month which helped them top their group and qualify for the last 16 - should give them the confidence of getting a result in their first home game in the Championship.

He said: “We know we’ve got quality in the squad and we’ve seen with the results we’ve had against Premiership opposition in the League Cup, beating Dundee, that we can cause Partick Thistle problems.

“We know they are a good side and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a fresh team to face after being in League One for so long.

“Hopefully the fans get behind us in their numbers for that first game.

“Saturday was disappointing but it is still early doors. We don’t want to get into a bad habit. Winning is a habit and losing can be a habit as well, so we don’t want to get into that.

“We want to get momentum going as soon as possible.”

Partick will be favourites to take the three points at New Broomfield but, asked about the task facing his side, player-boss McCabe said: “I don’t go into any game to lose.

“It doesn’t matter
