Aiden McGeady update emerges ahead of Sunderland’s showdown with Shrewsbury
Sunderland manager Alex Neil has revealed that Aiden McGeady is making good progress in terms of his road to recovery from injury and could be back on the grass next week.
McGeady has not featured for the Black Cats since their clash with Shrewsbury Town in November as he has been sidelined with a knee issue.
In the absence of the 36-year-old, Sunderland have turned to the likes of Jack Clarke, Patrick Roberts, Leon Dajaku and Lynden Gooch for inspiration in the wide areas of the pitch.
Set to face Shrewsbury for the second time this season today, the Black Cats will unquestionably fancy their chances of sealing all three points in this fixture following their recent display against Oxford United.
Sunderland secured a 2-1 victory over the U’s at the Kassam Stadium last weekend thanks to goals from Corry Evans and Elliot Embleton.
Currently sixth in the League One standings, Sunderland will be aiming to retain their spot in the play-offs by delivering the goods on a consistent basis between now and the end of the season.
Ahead of the club’s meeting with Shrewsbury, Neil has shared an update on McGeady.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference (as cited by the Sunderland Echo) about the winger, Neil said: “I did say we were reliant on Aiden’s rehab, as much as anything else.
“He’s made better progress in the last seven days, and I anticipate him being on the grass in the next week, although potentially not with us.
“I’m hopeful that in the next week, he might start joining in training again, but it’ll be reliant on how he goes over these next few steps in terms of what he looks like over the next couple of days, when he gets up to his high speed and all of that type of stuff.
“It’ll be a case of how he reacts to that.”
