AFCON 2023: CAF announces Nigeria’s official 40-man provisional squad

Nigeria’s official 40-man provisional squad for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire has been unveiled.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) published the 40-man squad on their website on Wednesday, 20 December, 2023.

The Super Eagles provisional list is made up of six goalkeepers, 13 defenders, eight midfielders, and 13 forwards.

Goalkeepers Amas Obasogie, Ojo Olorunleke, and Christian Nwoke are the only home-based players included.

Francis Uzoho, Adebayo Adeleye, and Chippa United first choice Stanley Nwabali make up the six goalkeepers shortlisted.

William Troost-Ekong, Kevin Akpoguma, Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Nwakali, Paul Onuachu and Emmanuel Dennis are making a return to the team.

Notable names like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Terem Moffi, Victor Boniface, Moses Simon made the cut.

Also included are Ademola Lookman, Nathan Tella, Umar Sadiq, Ola Aina, Joe Aribo, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

The 40-man squad will be trimmed down to 27 players who will represent the country at next year’s tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Super Eagles are in Group A with Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
