Aberdeen could split Celtic and Rangers as Chris Sutton warns top two party could be gatecrashed by Jimmy Thelin

Chris Sutton has admitted there is a possibility that Aberdeen could gatecrash the top two party in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic have been dominant in recent times over Rangers in terms of the league title but the derby rivals finish either first or second more often than not across the 38 game season. This season however, Jimmy Thelin and Aberdeen have matched Brendan Rodgers' champions stride for strike at the league summit with both chalking up seven wins from seven matches. Philippe Clement and his Light Blues find themselves trailing the duo at this early stage by five points with the top flight boasting a huge top of the table showdown this weekend at Parkhead following the international break.

It could prove to be a huge period for Aberdeen who also face Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final at Hampden before the November international break. They also host Rangers and face Dundee United in a run of fixtures that will show if the Reds are the real deal in the fight at the top end of the table. The early season form and ability to grind out results like Hearts last time out after trailing at a point 2-1 has sparked intrigue and questions about whether they can sustain their challenge.

This prompted a punter to ask Celtic legend Sutton as part of his questions with Chris segment in the Daily Mail's 'It's all Kicking Off podcast' what needs to be done in Scotland to see teams outside the top two to compete for the title?
