Rangers comeback has Celtic caller purring about result from heaven as Hotline fillets Halliday's celebration snub
Rangers relieved some pressure on boss Philippe Clement by booking their place in the Premier Sports Cup final after coming from a goal down to defeat Motherwell 2-1 at Hampden - but the result has been surprisingly welcomed by one Celtic Hotline caller.
The Old Firm rivals will meet in next month's showpiece final after Brendan Rodgers' Hoops smashed Aberdeen 6-0 in Saturday's semi-final but Steve McSherry, Uddingston firmly believes Motherwell would have been a sterner test for the Parkhead side on December 15. He said: "I think the majority of Celtic fans will feel like me that Rangers getting to the league cup final was the best result for Celtic. If Motherwell had won then there’s always the chance of a cup upset but this way the first part of the treble is in the bag. The self proclaimed second biggest club in Scotland are no longer a viable threat to Celtic."
One big talking point from Rangers victory against the Steelmen came after just 25 minutes of play when Motherwell went in front thanks to Andy Halliday. The midfielder spent five seasons with the Light Blues between 2015 and 2020 and his decision to show respect to his former employers has not sat right with two Hotline callers.
Jim McClean, Rothesay, wrote: "Disgraceful by Halliday not celebrating his goal in a cup semi final, that’s demeaning to the club who pay his wages. He was more or less apologising to the Rangers supporters and should have been taken off at half time." Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, added: "Halliday was hilarious. He refused to celebrate in front of the fans who watched as Celtics man of the match every time he played against them. Hardly a beloved legend or hall of famer at Ibrox."
There was plenty of reaction from Celtic's demolition
