'A real tough opponent' - Declan Rice names Man City legend as his toughest test
Declan Rice has named Manchester City icon David Silva as the toughest opponent he has faced in his career.
The 22-year-old had no hesitation but to choose the Spanish playmaker as he spoke in awe of the wizardry that the Spanish midfielder could produce.
2021 was an astronomical year for the West Ham skipper as he helped the Hammers qualify for the Europa League before becoming a stalwart in England's midfield during their pursuit of European Championship glory - although it ended on a sour note in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy in the final.
But Rice explained that he struggled to play against City legend, Silva, during his formative years with the Hammers.
"David Silva," Rice told the Overlap when asked who was the toughest opponent he has faced.
"He was just so intelligent. When the ball was probably on the right-hand side and he was on the ball, he was planning his next steps and that was him on the ball.
"Off the ball, for me, the positions he took up, he was constantly on the move, constantly checking his shoulder, he knew his next pass, playing eye of the needle balls through the back of the line - he was a real tough opponent."
As a result of his performances domestically and on the international stage, Rice has become a player of interest for clubs as they look to utilise one of England's most promising midfielders.
From a City perspective, some fans have touted the midfielder to succeed midfield general Fernandinho when his time at the club comes to an end.
