'A poor call' - Roy Keane and Micah Richards blast ref Simon Hooper for Man City vs Tottenham decision

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards and Roy Keane were all left bewildered at referee Simon Hooper's decision which denied Manchester City a potential late winner against Tottenham.

With the game level at 3-3, Erling Haaland was fouled by Emerson Royal as the Blues looked to break away. Referee Hooper initially waved played on as the Norway international picked himself up and played Jack Grealish through on goal, but the official then reversed his decision by awarding a free-kick, sparking wholesale confusion.

City's players and manager Pep Guardiola were left incensed by the decision, as the game eventually ended level at the Etihad Stadium. Haaland himself was perhaps lucky to escape a second yellow card for his reaction, as he stormed off down the tunnel, as much of the crowd booed the officials off the pitch following the full-time whistle.

"I don’t understand," began Richards during Sky Sports post-match coverage. "The ref had a good game, until this moment. He puts the whistle to his mouth, stops, waves it on. And then stops the play. Which I don’t understand.

"He should’ve let play go on, Grealish is one-on-one with the keeper. You can’t explain that. We’ve had so many situations where play is allowed to go on, if in doubt let it go on. We can always bring it back."

Carragher himself shared the same views, insisting that Hooper's mistake could prove pivotal, saying: "They need to get to the bottom of this. It was a foul but to put your arm up and blow the whistle."
