'A cloud over me' - Saido Berahino opens up putting off-field issues behind him at Hillsborough

Saido Berahino has been speaking to the media this week following his crucial goal in Sheffield Wednesday's 3-1 victory against Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.

The Owls had been 1-0 down to a Dan Gardner penalty but it was Berahino who turned the game on its head, scoring to make it 2-1 to Wednesday after Callum Patterson had equalised, assisted by Berahino.

Berahino has struggled to affect things at Hillsborough as much as he would have liked to when he made the move to League One, but he has spoken on a range of things, including the off-field issues which he had been infamous for in his previous spell in England. The former youth international is keen to put those incidents behind him and appears happy to be part of things in Darren Moore's squad.

"Unfortunately that's something that will be a cloud over me wherever I go. The people and players that have worked with me or spent any time with me understand who I am. This season I've had no problems with anyone and although I haven't performed as well on the pitch as I'd like to, I've shown a glimpse. I hope now I can kick on and help the team get a promotion."

Speaking of Moore, Berahino hailed him as vital in his return to English football:

"I know him really well, we know each other inside out. I watched him as a ballboy, I knew him as a young lad and so I know what a good guy he is. It's been great to actually work with him again.

"He was important for me coming back to England, to have somebody who understands me as a person and what sort of player I am. I've shown a little glimpse of what I can do, but behind closed doors he's been like a mentor, he's helped me a lot. He's been fantastic for me."
