Saido Berahino's promotion message Sheffield Wednesday supporters will love

Saido Berahino says he is desperate to become "a hero" with Sheffield Wednesday after his hat-trick against Cambridge United moved the Owls closer to a promotion spot. Darren Moore 's side are now just two points adrift of the League One play-off spots thanks to a devastating 6-0 demolition of Cambridge at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.

Lloyd Jones' own-goal on six minutes opened the scoring before Barry Bannan doubled the home side's lead four minutes later. Three goals from Berahino with a Geoge Byers strike sandwiched in-between imposed a gulf in class between the two sides.

And Berahino revealed at full-time a conversation he had with former Owls defender Chris Brunt ahead of his move to Hillsborough.

He said: "I'm enjoying it here. There are great fans and it's a great stadium when you are doing well and scoring goals. I knew that will always be behind me because I played with Chris Brunt and he told me if you give your all the fans always back you.

"So far I'm enjoying myself and it's going well. He told me to go and be a hero here, to go get and Wednesday promoted and that's what I'm trying to do."

Speaking more broadly about his goal tally - his first hat-trick since a 7-0 FA Cup win for West Brom over Gateshead back in 2015 - Berahino said it will only boost his confidence as a striker.

The former Baggies striker had never scored a league hat-trick prior to the win over Cambridge United and was suffering a relatively barren run in-front of goal having scored twice in just six appearances since the start of 2022.
