We don’t have a title race in this country.

We have a status symbol that is the meaning of life to two sets of supporters who position themselves at the point between apoplexy and hysteria until the winner has been decided.

Rangers deserve all the credit in the world for eliminating European aristocrats Borussia Dortmund to move into the last 16 of the Europa League.

And they will have justifiable confidence in their ability to go still further.

But if Gio van Bronckhorst doesn’t win the Premiership, the season it is a disaster.

That’s the reality.

Likewise, Celtic will now be ridiculed, deservedly, for having gone out of three European competitions in one season.

But all will be forgiven, and forgotten, instantly if they’re crowned champions under Ange Postecoglou. That’s what you call insularity. But it’s true.

And today cranks up the tension another notch in the psychological free-for-all for the emotionally over-wrought.

Logic and reason tells you Celtic have a far harder job at Easter Road than Rangers are likely to face against Motherwell at Ibrox.

Mainly because Celtic will need to overcome themselves before they can overtake Hibs.
