6 Feyenoord vs Celtic VAR calls in focus from IFAB rule that halted Lagerbielke let off to no Holm comfort

It was a disappointing night for Celtic as they opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord.

But the game wasn't short of talking points as Brendan Rodgers watched Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm see red inside the De Kuip cauldron, as well as Joe Hart saving a penalty. There was also two narrow escapes for the Hoops with the Dutch champions left disappointed that they didn't win by a more convincing margin with two more goals ruled out for offside.

Referee Irfan Peljto had a busy evening on the park, while Ivan Bebek wasn't getting any rest in the VAR room. Record Sport takes a look at the big calls in the Scottish champions Group E opener.

Celtic survived a VAR check for a potential penalty for handball against Greg Taylor but it never looked in any danger of being a spot kick. A lofted ball looked to have skimmed the hand of the full-back, but the referee was not asked to review the decision and sent the player to the monitor.

On commentary for TNT Sports John Hartson said: "It would have been very harsh - it just runs through to the goalkeeper."

Gustaf Lagerbielke was penalised as he jostled for the ball in the box with Igor Paixao. The penalty was checked by VAR before being given the green light - before Paixao was denied by Joe Hart. Jermaine Jenas
