£54m Newcastle target would be 'bigger coup than Trippier & Bruno'

Newcastle United signing Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak would be a “bigger coup” than when they landed Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Newcastle made five signings in the January transfer window, with Trippier and Guimaraes being the standout names to arrive at St James’ Park.

Oblak has spent the last eight seasons at Atletico, and he won La Liga with the Spanish club last year.

However, his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium is due to expire in 2023, meaning that he is set to be a free agent in just 15 months’ time.

Newcastle have been linked with making a move for the 6 foot 2 shot-stopper, and it is understood that Oblak would be open to trying his luck in the Premier League following a lengthy stint in Spain.

Given what Oblak has achieved at Atletico, O’Rourke thinks he would be a marquee signing for Eddie Howe’s side, and feels landing the £54m-rated goalkeeper would be even more impressive than when the club tempted Trippier and Guimaraes to Tyneside.

Comparing Oblak potentially joining Newcastle to Trippier and Guimaraes moving to the North-East, O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I would say he’d have to be a bigger coup than those two signings. You’re talking about a world-class goalkeeper here in Oblak, a real consistent performer for Atletico Madrid over the last 5-10 years. He’s been a regular in the Champions League.”

Oblak has not had his best season in an Atletico shirt this term as he has conceded 36 goals in 29 league appearances. That is already 11 more goals than he shipped in the entire campaign last year when Atletico won the league.
