5 Scotland surprises Steve Clarke could spring against Netherlands as cryptic line up message has Tartan Army guessing

Steve Clarke is a Scotland creature of habit, but has hinted that he may try something a bit different against the Netherlands.

The squad that travelled to Amsterdam may not be packed with new faces, but it offers an opportunity to try a different approach as Clarke looks to spring a shock on Euro 2024 hosts Germany when his team take centre stage on opening night come June 14. "We've had a couple of really good training sessions where I've asked them to think about doing something a little bit different," he said.

"I won't tell you what it is but these are the kind of games where you can use that opportunity to try something to be a little bit different. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Maybe we have to readjust after we've seen it in action against the Dutch. But we just want to keep improving. There's no real secret to that. There's no short circuit. You just have to work as hard as you can every time you're together. Respect your opposition and try to play as well as you can play."

Two up front

Lawrence Shankland's Hearts form has made him a near certainty to be on the plane. Whether he starts or not is now the debate, although leaving such a red hot goalscorer on the bench might be something that Clarke simply can't afford to do. He's not known for attacking adventure, but pairing Shankland with the hard working, hard running Che Adams may appeal. Lyndon Dykes could offer a decent foil on a more traditional partnership.
