2022 women's NCAA tournament best bets for the Sweet 16

The 2022 NCAA women's basketball tournament rolls on with the Sweet 16 up next. All four No. 1 seeds — Louisville, South Carolina, Stanford and NC State — remain in the field. ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme is here to offer his best bets for the Sweet 16.

Spokane Region (West): 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN), Spokane Arena, Spokane, Wash.

Creme's pick: Under 144.5

This is a matchup of top-10 offenses, so the under might not sound logical. However, Stanford also has one of the best defenses in the country. And, while Maryland has scored the second-most points in the tournament thus far, the Terps did it against a No. 12 (albeit underseeded Florida Gulf Coast) and a No. 13 seed. Against the best defenses the Terps faced in the Big Ten — Michigan and Indiana — they averaged just 55.5 PPG. When these teams met in November in the Bahamas, the game went over the 144.5, but both teams are much better defensively now, and Maryland still struggled, shooting just 30.9% from the field, with Angel Reese getting completely bottled up by Cameron Brink on the inside.

Bridgeport Region (East): 2 p.m. ET (ESPN), Total Mortgage Arena, Bridgeport, Conn.

Creme's pick: Over 126.5

Both teams were in low-scoring slugfests in their second-round games, and both are outstanding defensive teams. But they are also both much better offensive teams than were on display on Monday, filled with experience.
