2 pros and 2 cons to Barnsley appointing 50-year-old as Asbaghi’s replacement

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is a name that has been linked with the Barnsley managerial vacancy in recent days.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, who reports that the Tykes are keen on bringing the 50 year old to Oakwell.

Hasselbaink is currently manager of League One club Burton Albion.

Here, we’ve weighed up two pro’s and two cons of the former Chelsea and Netherlands striker being appointed Barnsley boss.

Pro – Experience

Despite being a big name, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has racked up extensive experience coaching in the EFL.

He has took charge of 128 games in League One to date, and also had a season in the Championship, and half a season in League Two.

In that sense, there is nothing Hasselbaink has not seen at this stage and this could make him a good fit for the Oakwell vacancy.

It’s undeniable that when he took over at Burton Albion last season for the second time, Hasselbaink did a good job.

The Brewers were bottom of the league when he took control and he guided them to a comfortable 16th placed finish in League One in 2020/21.

In 2021/22 then. everybody was expecting Burton to kick on and compete for a place in the top half, or even potentially the play-offs, however, things did not transpire this way.

The Brewers once again finished 16th and this stagnation may be something Barnsley should be wary of.

During his firs spell at Burton Albion, the club won the League Two title and in that sense, Hasselbaink knows what it takes to get promoted.

The EFL’s 46 game seasons are long and gruelling on any squad, particularly those constructed on tight budgets in League’s One and Two, and Hasselbaink not only has experience in that, but proof he can handle it well.

Barnsley will certainly be looking for a promotion
