Although we're not exactly in the middle of heatwave right now, we still love to indulge in an ice cream or ice lolly during the summer months.

For many Mancunians, ice creams and ice lollies will have strong nostalgic memories associated with their own childhoods. I mean, who can forget being a kid and pestering your mum or dad for money as soon as you heard the off-key jangle of an ice cream van doing its rounds on a hot day.

Of course these days there will be a few favourites missing from the menu we once scrutinised at the side of the van. Some of the brands and flavours we remember so vividly in our younger days, you'd be hard pushed to find in the supermarket now.

Of course, Manchester has a rich history when it comes to ice cream, pioneered by a thriving community of ice cream makers from Italian immigrant families making their home in the city in the 19th century.
