What happened when we messaged people claiming to sell Taylor Swift tickets on Twitter

It's been a whirlwind week for Taylor Swift fans as thousands scrambled for tickets to The Eras Tour.

The American mega star is celebrating all 10 of her studio albums with shows in London, Liverpool, Cardiff and Edinburgh next summer. The Eras Tour kicks off in Edinburgh on Friday 7 June 2024 and closes at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday August 17.

One thing that stood out while reporting on the ticket sales was the sea of Twitter accounts advertising their own tickets for resale - even before all general sale dates had taken place.

Tickets for all three Liverpool gigs on June 13, June 14 and June 15 went on general sale at either 11am, 1pm or 3pm on Tuesday, July 18. A quick search of ‘Taylor Swift tickets’ on Twitter on the day brought up hundreds of accounts posting similar copy-and-paste messages, along the lines of: “I’m selling 4x Taylor Swift tickets for June 15, DMs open x”.

Variations of these tweets could be seen just minutes after tickets first went on sale at 11am and throughout the day between general sales.

High demand meant fans had to pre register even for general sale tickets, while those who pre-ordered her album Midnights could take part in last weeks' presale. Many fans were left disappointed this week when they beat the Ticketmaster and AXS queues only to discover VIP tickets costing £660 were the only option left.

That saw some shell out thousands of pounds for seated tickets as part of the VIP package, when seated tickets alone were previously on sale for between £57.90 and £143.00. Others who couldn't afford the high prices were left gutted at missing out.
