Regional security 'deteriorating', says Lithuania's president

Having recently called Wagner troops "serial killers", Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda calls for strengthened security on the Belarusian border. "As I understand, the plan of Lukashenko is to build the necessary infrastructure for 6,000 Wagner fighters. And then the most important question is what’s next?" Nausėda adds: "Nobody knows if it's possible to integrate those fighters again into the regular army of the Russian Federation because of the gap in salaries. So they might be used in Africa, they might be used to strengthen the Belarusian army."

Why fighter jets? Ukraine lobbies for air power ahead of counter-offensive

There's still no direct confrontation, but 15 months on, ratcheted-up support for Ukraine has morphed into an East-versus-West test of battle readiness that's brought the two sides closer to active combat than at arguably any time since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.

Russia has to 'find a way out of' its own mess, Portugal's foreign minister says

On Lula's pitch for a negotiated solution, Cravinho says: "Unfortunately, this is not a moment when we can be optimistic about any negotiations. But it is important that countries such as Brazil, such as China, such as India, that have an ongoing dialogue with Russia, engage with Russia in order to explain that Russia is going to have to find a way out of the mess it has created. This was very much part of our conversation with President Lula (of Brazil) when he was in Portugal."

'We have to re-adapt quickly to a long-term threat': Ex-Estonian president Kaljulaid

The former Estonian president implies that it's time for a leader from the Baltics or Eastern Europe to lead NATO – they have never had a secretary general – and pays tribute to the incumbent, Jens Stoltenberg, who has been in the job for nearly nine years.

Russia 'has no right' to tell Finland what to do: Europe Minister Tytti Tuppurainen

Asked how much of a setback it is for Finland to have Sweden left out of NATO for now, Tuppurainen responds: "It was our priority to enter NATO together. We started this process hand in hand and Sweden is our closest partner. It would have benefited NATO the most to have us both entering simultaneously. But here we are, in a different situation. This was not our choice. And we have to be humble, as applicant states. But since it looks like Finland is going to be in NATO before Sweden, then of course Finland will try to help Sweden to also join as soon as possible."

UN warns of aid cuts over Taliban crackdown on women’s rights

UNITED NATIONS: The UN envoy in Afghanistan warned on Wednesday that a Taliban administration crackdown on women’s rights is likely to lead to a drop in aid and development funding in the country, where women fear being cut from public life as much as violent death. The United Nations has made its single-largest country aid appeal ever, asking for $4.6 billion in 2023 to deliver help in Afghanistan, where two-thirds of the population — some 28 million people — need it to survive, said Roza Otunbayeva.

Twelve months that shook the world: What lessons on Russian invasion anniversary?

After the troop build-up, the failed mediation and Putin's speech denouncing Ukraine as a fiction, Russian special forces swooped for the Ukrainian capital's main military airport in a bid to establish an air bridge to seize Kyiv.

NATO vs Russia, Xi Jinping in Hong Kong, Trump & January 6, Paris attacks verdict

A day can feel like a year in Ukraine. On Thursday came a huge morale boost with the Russians forced to leave Snake Island, the strategic Black Sea outpost where a dramatic standoff unfolded in the opening days of the war. But just hours later, Moscow's missiles hit an apartment bloc in the nearby port city of Odesa. At least 19 people died. The Russian president travelled abroad for the first time since invading Ukraine in February, meeting in Turkmenistan with leaders of nations that border the Caspian Sea.
