Twelve months that shook the world: What lessons on Russian invasion anniversary?

After the troop build-up, the failed mediation and Putin's speech denouncing Ukraine as a fiction, Russian special forces swooped for the Ukrainian capital's main military airport in a bid to establish an air bridge to seize Kyiv.

The conflict has now become an artillery war in the heart of Europe, with the current battle for Bakhmut likened to the two years of trench warfare slaughter between the French and Germans at Verdun during World War I.
