The current season for Huddersfield Town is one that has the potential to replicate the successful promotion campaign of 2016/17. A couple of recent defeats have slightly derailed hopes of a finish in the play-off places but it is still certainly a realistic aspiration for Carlos Corberan’s side.
Huddersfield Town have decisions to make over nine current first-team players this summer with their deals set to come to an end. But which of them should be kept on, and which players might give them the opportunity to refresh the squad with new players? Here’s our verdicts on each of them…
Carlos Corberan has been full of praise for his goalkeeper Lee Nicholls after his form drew calls from Huddersfield supporters for an England call-up.
Huddersfield Town’s Lee Nicholls is leading the Championship’s goalkeepers on several stats and the Terriers have benefited enormously from having one of the league’s best this campaign. Clear on clean sheets and total saves made across the league, the Terriers’ stopper has been one of their players of the season.
Marcus Browning replacing the red-carded Nico Vaesen on the goalkeeper’s debut. Tom Cowan in the FA Cup against QPR after Tony Norman pulled a hamstring. Most memorably of all, Kieran O’Regan against Bury at Leeds Road, donning the gloves after Lee Martin was sent off – and scoring a penalty while still acting as goalkeeper. (What would you have done if you had missed? “The fastest 100m of my life!”)
Huddersfield Town have sprung plenty of pleasant surprises this season, but none more so than Lee Nicholls. The goalkeeper had played just seven Championship games before this season and spent most of last campaign warming the bench with third-tier Milton Keynes Dons.
Huddersfield Town were outclassed and soundly beaten in the Championship for the second time in four days as they fell to a 0-3 home defeat to second-placed Bournemouth.
