Lee Nicholls reveals which Huddersfield Town outfielder would go in goal in an emergency
Marcus Browning replacing the red-carded Nico Vaesen on the goalkeeper’s debut. Tom Cowan in the FA Cup against QPR after Tony Norman pulled a hamstring. Most memorably of all, Kieran O’Regan against Bury at Leeds Road, donning the gloves after Lee Martin was sent off – and scoring a penalty while still acting as goalkeeper. (What would you have done if you had missed? “The fastest 100m of my life!”)
Huddersfield Town have had to call upon emergency goalkeepers a few times in their history, and with Jamal Blackman and Jacob Chapman as back-up even in Ryan Schofield’s absence through a shoulder injury, it’s unlikely to happen again anytime soon. But current figurative number 1 Lee Nicholls has revealed which outfielder would likely take the gloves off him should the worst come to the worst.
Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel, he said: “I don’t know, I haven’t seen the boys in goal, but Danny Ward actually fancies himself! Wardy’s always said if for whatever reason we needed a keeper he’d be the one to go in.”

Unfortunately, the striker’s namesake – well known to Terriers fans – makes it difficult to Google whether the centre-forward has actually been required to fill in between the sticks during his professional career. But Nicholls confirmed Ward is something of a Sport Billy, saying: “It’s annoying.
“I went and played golf with him for the first time and I didn’t ask him beforehand what he played off. I should have asked him beforehand maybe! But yeah, he’s one of them, he’s good at everything: darts, golf, crickets, cards, everything. I’ve learned not to put any money on it!”
