Whitstable Town boss Marcel Nimani on his new-look squad ahead of their first friendly against Basildon United this Saturday

Manager Marcel Nimani is thrilled with the squad he has assembled at Whitstable ahead of the new campaign - having fended off higher-division interest in order to put it together.

Pre-season training is already well under way for the Oystermen, who host Basildon in their first friendly this weekend. Nimani’s four summer signings - and some of those they have kept hold of - had offers from elsewhere.

But instead, they have opted to be involved in Whitstable’s Southern Counties East Premier Division promotion push. “It’s quite an exciting year ahead for us,” said Nimani. “From our perspective, we were extremely happy with the retention of our players and the recruitment of our players. “We’ve had to compete with higher-tier teams to retain and sign our players. “We’re happy with the players that stayed and players we have brought in.” Isthmian North outfit Basildon, managed by former Welling Town boss Darren Manning, who finished 14th in their division last season, will be the first visitors to The Belmont on Saturday.

Nimani said: “It brings something new. “I know their manager very well. He has great experience and we’re looking forward to welcoming fans. “It should be an exciting game.” The match could also see new additions Eri Akintimehin, Steadman Callender, Tyler Anderson and Josh Williams line-up in Whitstable shirts for the first time after a weekend intra-club match. “We identified at the end of last season we were looking for more threats in front of goal and more speed,” Nimani noted. “Those four players had the attributes we need. “We think we have recruited really well, given we don’t have the biggest budget and we’re not the most central club in the region.
