Super Eagles begin preparation for Morocco 2025 AFCON’s final qualifiers

Fresh from their boardroom victory over Libya’s Mediterranean Knights, the Super Eagles have started preparations for their last Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.Following CAF’s decision to award three points and three goals to the Super Eagles in its judgment on the botched game between Libya and Nigeria, the Super Eagles have consolidated their position as Group D leaders with 10 points.

The team now needs only a point from the two games to stamp her ticket to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, in Morocco.Reliable hints from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) indicate that the list of players for the matches will be released this week, with Skipper Ahmed Musa (who has witnessed a renaissance in form since returning to the local league with Kano Pillars) likely to stage a comeback.CAF, yesterday, picked Monday, November 18 for Nigeria’s final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Rwanda.

The match is scheduled for the Akwa Ibom Stadium, Uyo.The Match Day 6 encounter will draw the curtain on the race for slots by teams in Group D for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations finals, to be held in Morocco December 2025/January 2026.CAF has also appointed Moroccan match officials for the game.

Samir Guezzaz will be the centre referee at the encounter that will commence at 5.00 p.m. Nigeria time.His compatriots Zakaria Brinsi, Abdessamad Abertoune, and Kech Chaf Mustapha will serve as assistant referee 1, assistant referee 2, and fourth official respectively.Prosper Harrison Addo, from Ghana will serve as the commissioner, while Somalian Ali Mohamed Ahmed will play the role of referee assessor.Before then, Nigeria will travel to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, November 14, as

Despite their inability to play in the last round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series following CAF’s decision to call off their game against Libya, the Super Eagles have moved up three places in the latest FIFA rankings.   In the October World ranking released, yesterday, by FIFA, the team moved to the 36th position from the previous 39th, gaining 1,503.29 points within the period under review.   The Super Eagles defeated Libya 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo, on October 11, but the return leg of the tie scheduled for Benghazi, Libya on October 15 was called off following the Libyans’ alleged ill-treatment of the Nigerian delegation two days before the game.   African football governing body, CAF is expected to rule on the botched game this week. Nigeria’s new FIFA ranking also reflects on the Super Eagles’ position in Africa, as they are now the fourth-best team in the continent, up from last month’s sixth position.    Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt are the three leading teams in that order.  Argentina, France (second), and Spain (third) are still the leading teams in the world, followed by England (fourth), Brazil (fifth) and Belgium (sixth).
Former Morocco midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada has died at the age of 35, Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille, the two clubs he played for in France, announced on Thursday. "Rest in peace Abdelaziz," Marseille wrote on X while PSG wrote of their "great sadness" at the news of his death. Born in France, Barrada started his career at PSG before moving to Getafe in Spain.
