Mamelodi Sundowns' perfect start to the Betway Premiership season came to an abrupt halt as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Bulelani Nikani’s 82nd-minute goal was the decisive moment, handing the defending champions only their third loss in 49 months and lifting Rise and Shine to fourth in the standings, level on points with Chippa United. The match began with Sundowns controlling possession but struggling to break through a well-organised Polokwane City defence.

Despite the midfield presence of Marcelo Allende and Lebohang Maboe dictating the tempo, Sundowns couldn't find a way to unlock the hosts' backline.

Polokwane, on the other hand, created some promising chances, particularly through Hlayisi Chauke and Alexander, though their finishing left much to be desired in the first half. After a goalless first 45 minutes, Sundowns emerged from half-time with renewed purpose, immediately seizing control of the ball.
