Newcastle defender Dan Burn has underlined that the Magpies will travel to Wembley for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester United to win the trophy, not simply to make up the numbers.
The club are in their first final since 1999 having not lifted major cup silverware since their 1955 FA Cup success. Meanwhile, United are looking to end their near-six-year trophy drought having lost an FA Cup and a Europa League final in the years since.
The Reds - the only Premier League side left in four competitions this season - are favourites going into the showdown, with Newcastle now weakened by the suspension of Nick Pope following his red card against Liverpool on Saturday. Like Pope, Burn has played a significant role in helping Newcastle keep a league-high 12 clean sheets this season, one of which came in October’s goalless draw at Old Trafford against United.
