Newcastle star Dan Burn sends warning to Manchester United ahead of Carabao Cup final

Newcastle defender Dan Burn has underlined that the Magpies will travel to Wembley for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester United to win the trophy, not simply to make up the numbers.

The club are in their first final since 1999 having not lifted major cup silverware since their 1955 FA Cup success. Meanwhile, United are looking to end their near-six-year trophy drought having lost an FA Cup and a Europa League final in the years since.

The Reds - the only Premier League side left in four competitions this season - are favourites going into the showdown, with Newcastle now weakened by the suspension of Nick Pope following his red card against Liverpool on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side are fifth in the table after that result, having been inside the top four for a large portion of the season. Like Pope, Burn has played a significant role in helping Newcastle keep a league-high 12 clean sheets this season, one of which came in October’s goalless draw at Old Trafford against United.

Burn is confident his team will not crumble amid the pressure of the occasion and are going for the jugular at Wembley this weekend. “Yeah, we’ve worked really hard to get there,” he told club media.

“So we’re going to enjoy it. We’re going there to win. I don’t want it just to be where as a club and as a city we go there just happy for a day out. We’re going there to do a job.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve won anything and we need to change that. That’s what we’ll be going to do.”
