The 37-year-old would only last 45 minutes due to his lack of pre-season minutes and he would be replaced by Amad. Before the final whistle blew at the Theatre of Dreams, Ronaldo had left the stadium and could potentially have missed his replacement's instant impact.
Alex Telles' long-range effort was parried to Amad who fired home for United. Rayo Vallecano would level in the 57th minute with Alvaro Garcia Rivera finishing following a Tom Heaton save.
