Manchester United's shambolic season took another turn for the worse in a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth as Liverpool went top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp admitted the Reds were fortunate to win 2-1 at 10-man Crystal Palace after Jordan Ayew's harsh red card changed the game late on.

Bournemouth's fine form continued as the Cherries secured their first ever victory at Old Trafford in style on a day United's season hit a new low.

Erik ten Hag's men had risen to sixth thanks to six wins in eight Premier League games. But a dreadful display put the Dutchman's position back under the spotlight ahead of a likely exit from the Champions League at the group stage in midweek.

Liverpool host Premier League leaders Arsenal at Anfield, hoping to leapfrog Mikel Arteta's men in the points table with a win on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp's men, currently third in the table, trail the Gunners by a solitary point. With Aston Villa missing the chance to go top of the table on Friday following their disappointing 1-1 draw at home to bottom-placed Sheffield United, Liverpool can open a two-point gap at the top with a win at Anfield later on Saturday. The Reds can rely on talisman Mohamed Salah, who is currently second in the scoring charts and also the joint top assist maker with seven goals.

Liverpool and Arsenal will battle for the Christmas number one spot when they meet on Saturday, each with a golden chance to open up a significant lead over absent champions Manchester City. If there is not a winner at Anfield, third-placed Aston Villa could be top at Christmas for the first time since 1999 should their phenomenal home form continue against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United. The festive Premier League programme also features Manchester United's trip to West Ham and in-form Everton's visit to fifth-placed Tottenham.
